In a small room at the end of a long building in town, Lydia invites us into her hairdressing studio, which she calls her “saloon”. In the corner her new hair-dryer stands tall and proud. On a table she displays hair products, extensions and accessories for both men and women under a sign that outlines the prices for her services.
If you want to make an appointment your name will not be entered into a book, but a call on Lydia’s cell phone will do the trick.
Within walking distance of Lydia’s “saloon” is a two room shack where she lives with her husband and two children. Right now as a result of her second loan from Phakamani Foundation, which is supported by The Townships Pro-ject, she’s been saving and making bricks for the house that she and her hus-band are planning to build.
With her first loan Lydia was able to stock up her business with products which has set her up for success.
$1.00 = approx. 7 Rand
