Florah led us into a dark room with one double bed that is piled high with merchandise that she whisks out of boxes and containers to show us. She sells shoes, new and second hand clothing, bags, duvet covers and snacks.
When Florah’s husband passed away, she was left with her four children plus her brother’s orphaned child to care for, and had to ask another brother to help feed her family. After a while it became more difficult, as he had a family of his own to care for, and she was afraid to ask him for more food. Florah was excited when Phakamani Foundation, which is supported by The Townships Project, arrived. Now after receiving her third loan, she has been able to expand her business, add three bedrooms to her one-roomed house and has started construction on yet another.
Outside her home, Florah has developed a vegetable garden from which she is able to sell fresh produce to her neighbours and also to feed her fam-ily. Hunger is no longer an issue and now she “can do anything she wants”.
$1.00 = approx. 7 Rand
