By December 2011, The Townships Project had enabled more than 35,000 individual loans since its inception, working with local microlending institutions which employ loan officers who live in the community they serve. Each loan helps to support, on average, five family members, meaning we had helped to change more than 175,000 lives by December, 2011. Each month, the microlending institutions we support make an 2,000 additional loans, affecting 10,000 lives.
In August 2011, in order to make those life changes more effective and efficient, The Townships Project initiated MicroFranchising Launch: Trade Show and Workshops, to create profitable, affordable, replicable small businesses offering better products and services cheaper to those at the base of the economic pyramid. It’s a way for the poor to “buy a job”, which offers skills training, enlists community and corporate support, recruits investment and builds a culture of business in families. This is a potentially world-changing strategy for prosperity creation and poverty eradication.
